GOD WE CONFESS OUR WICKEDNESS TO YOU
By Fr. Felix (African Times Guest Writer)
The reading is one of several pieces from
Jeremiah threatening the disaster which was to
come upon Judah and Jerusalem; they are
gathered together in a series, and one can
imagine Jeremiah pronouncing them, time after
time in various circumstances.
A previous piece has just described a
disastrous drought in which even the donkey
gasp for air from lack of pasture; this may be a
metaphor for the military destruction.
Now the blow seems to be in the form of a
slaughter as well, corpses littering the
countryside.
Then the lament merges into a confession of
guilt and a prayer that this LORD will not
himself break the covenant by dishonouring
Jerusalem, the throne of his glory.
