SUSPECTED BABY THIEVES AT MAMA LUCY HOSPITAL DETAINED

Three people working at Mama Lucy Hospital

Nairobi County Kenya Makala Fred Leparan,

Emma Mutio and Regina Musembi were

arrested and arraigned before Nairobi’s Senior

Principal Magistrate Bernard Ochoi under

miscellaneous application seeking more days

to complete investigations.

The three, a junior staff and two Senior Doctors

at Mama Lucy Hospital Nairobi County were

arrested on Tuesday 17th on allegations that

they were behind the baby theft syndicate

which has been condemned internationally as

inhuman.

The exposed syndicate of child trafficking was

highlighted by an undercover freelance

Journalist who posed as a buyer to baby selling

black market and managed to buy three babies

at a throw away price.

The application to detain the three suspect was

filed by Director of Criminal Investigations

Nairobi Area through Detective Wanga Masake

and Detective Peter Orwa before the Court and

submitted seeking more days to complete the

preliminary investigation.

The Detectives informed the court that they

managed to trace three babies at a Nairobi’s

Children’s home and they were still pursuing

others whom they believe are within the East

lands region and also to process the suspects

including statements of the complainants.

The suspects through their team of lawyers led

by Danstan Omari opposed the State

application to detain them, urging the Court to

release their clients on lenient bail inline to

Article 50 and 49 of the new 2010 Constitution.

Senior Principal Magistrate Bernard Ochoi will

deliver a ruling on Thursday 19th at 9am

whether to release the suspects on bond or

grant the prayers of the State Prosecution.

The Court was informed that the fourth suspect

Musa Mohammed, former hospital

superintendent mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital was

also arrested on Wednesday 18th and is being

processed to be arraigned before court.
