KEPSA ENDORSES AMB. AMINA MOHAMMED FOR WORLD TRADE ORGANIZATION POSITION

The Nomination of Ambassador Amina
Mohammed, for the World Trade Organization’s
Director General position comes as a great
opportunity for the business community in
Kenya, African and indeed the entire world.
Ambassador Amina Mohammed has delivered
on her mandate while serving in various
ministerial positions and a diplomat, and has a
wealth of experience with the WTO and the
multilateral trading system, making her fit for
the position.
“The business community is confident that
Amb. Mohammed has all it takes to lead the
WTO into the future and we are hopeful that she
will be deemed fit to lead the necessary reforms
that will bring about a sustainable economic
recovery and ensure member states benefit
from better trade policies that offer the most
effective avenue for wealth creation and
economic growth”, remarked the KEPSA CEO
Mrs. Carole Karuga.
“We further believe that her experience as a
diplomat will help her navigate the current
delicate international trade ecosystem, ensuring
a prosperous future for WTO member states”,
she added.
She has displayed great finesse as a strategist
and negotiator and has had a great track record
with World Trade Organization (WTO). As the
first woman to have chaired the three most
important bodies of the organization: the Trade
Policy Body, the Dispute Settlement Body and
the Governing General Council of the WTO. If
successful, she will also be the first African,
and first woman to serve at the helm of the
organization.
Her professionalism has been evident in the
various roles that she has served, most notably
as the Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs and
International Trade. In her role as the Kenya’s
foreign minister Amb. Mohammed and KEPSA
co–hosted heads of states and other
delegations both locally and internationally. She
worked with the Kenya’s apex private sector
lobby group to find solutions to some of the
pressing challenges facing the business
community, as well as providing an enabling
environment for local businesses and investors.
Among them is the 10th WTO Ministerial
Conference held in Nairobi in 2015, which was
chaired and hosted by Amb. Mohammed.
KEPSA partnered with her ministry to host
delegates from around the world for a gala
dinner, offering them a chance to interact with
the local business community.
KEPSA seats at the WTO trade committee,
mandated to keep under continuous review the
participation of developing country members in
the multilateral trading system, and has been
an active participant in WTO initiatives among
them the Trade Dialogues forum.

below, endorses Ambassador Amina
Mohammed’s bid for election as the Director
General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

The Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) is a
limited liability membership organisation
registered in 2003 as the apex body of private
sector in Kenya.
KEPSA’s mandate is the voice of private sector
in Kenya. KEPSA therefore is an inclusive and
proactive body that provides an institutional
framework for Government and private sector
partnership; a facilitator for the private sector in
public policy dialogue and an umbrella policy
and networking institution for the private sector
in Kenya; and, a promoter of public-private
sector partnerships in addressing the
